The Challenge
The D-Day beaches stretch across 80 kilometers of the Normandy coastline. Unlike Paris or London, there’s no metro, no tram, and very limited bus service connecting the main sites. Most visitors assume they need a rental car.
They don’t. Here are all your options — ranked from most to least convenient.
Option 1: Private Tour (Best Experience)
A private driver picks you up at your hotel, takes you to every site you want, and gives you context and stories along the way. You set the pace — want to spend an extra hour at the American Cemetery? Done. Want to skip something and add Pointe du Hoc instead? No problem.
Pros:
- Door-to-door from your hotel
- Flexible itinerary — you decide what to see
- Local knowledge and historical context
- Comfortable vehicle (we use a Tesla Model 3 with WiFi and refreshments)
- Perfect for couples, small families, or anyone who values their time
Cons:
- Higher cost than group tours (but you’re paying for exclusivity and flexibility)
Cost: From €375 for a full-day D-Day tour (currently -35% promo for our first clients).
Best for: Anyone who wants the most out of their day, doesn’t want to share with strangers, and values comfort.
Option 2: Group Bus Tours
Several operators run group tours from Bayeux or Caen. You’ll typically visit 3-4 sites in a day with a guide and 20-40 other tourists.
Pros:
- Affordable (€80-120 per person)
- Guide included
- No planning needed
Cons:
- Fixed schedule — the bus leaves whether you’re ready or not
- Crowded, especially in summer
- Limited time at each site (usually 30-45 minutes)
- Pick-up points are limited (usually only Bayeux or Caen center)
- No flexibility to change the itinerary
Best for: Solo travelers on a budget or people who prefer structured tours.
Option 3: Taxi or Uber
You can technically hire a taxi from Bayeux or Caen to visit the beaches.
Pros:
- Flexible timing
- Door-to-door
Cons:
- Very expensive (the meter runs while you visit sites)
- The driver typically waits in the parking lot — no guiding, no context
- Uber barely exists outside Caen
- A full day by taxi costs €600-700+ without any tour value
Best for: Short trips to one specific site, not for a full day of exploration.
Option 4: Seasonal Bus Routes
The Bus Verts network runs limited summer routes (June-September) connecting Bayeux to some D-Day sites. Line 70 goes to the American Cemetery and Omaha Beach.
Pros:
- Very cheap (a few euros per ride)
- Local experience
Cons:
- Summer only (roughly June to September)
- Very few departures per day (often just 2-3)
- Limited stops — only the main sites
- No service to Utah Beach, Pointe du Hoc, or Sainte-Mère-Église
- No commentary or context
Best for: Budget travelers with lots of time and flexibility, visiting in summer.
Option 5: Bicycle
Normandy is relatively flat, and cycling between the beaches is possible. Several shops in Bayeux rent bikes, including e-bikes.
Pros:
- Active and scenic
- Complete freedom
- Eco-friendly
Cons:
- Distances are significant (Omaha to Utah is ~30 km)
- Weather is unpredictable (Normandy is famous for rain)
- Exhausting if you want to see more than 2-3 sites
- Limited bike lanes on main roads
Best for: Fit travelers who want to combine sport with sightseeing, ideally over 2 days.
The D-Day Sites You Shouldn’t Miss
Whatever transport you choose, here are the must-see sites:
| Site | Why Visit | Time Needed |
|---|---|---|
| American Cemetery (Colleville) | 9,387 white crosses overlooking Omaha Beach. Profoundly moving. | 1.5-2 hours |
| Omaha Beach | The bloodiest landing beach. Walk the sand where history was made. | 45 min-1 hour |
| Pointe du Hoc | The cliff the Rangers scaled. Craters still visible. Breathtaking. | 1 hour |
| Utah Beach Museum | Excellent museum with a real B-26 bomber. Less crowded than Omaha. | 1-1.5 hours |
| Sainte-Mère-Église | Airborne Museum. The church with the paratrooper on the steeple. | 1-1.5 hours |
| Juno Beach Centre | Canadian D-Day story, often overlooked. Powerful exhibits. | 1 hour |
My Recommendation
If you have one day for the D-Day beaches:
Most comfortable & complete: A private tour covers 4-5 sites with context, stories, and no stress. You see more because there’s no waiting for a group.
Best budget option: A group tour from Bayeux covers the essentials for ~€100.
Most adventurous: Rent an e-bike in Bayeux and ride to Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery (15 km each way). Save the other sites for day two.
Whatever you choose, don’t try to visit all the beaches in one day. Focus on 3-4 sites and actually experience them. The emotional weight of these places deserves your time and attention.
